Who moved my cheese?
Hello my friends. This is my last day in IBM, after almost 20 years.
(Well,
according to HR, it is 19.09 year.) I sent this email to say goodbye to
many of you I have not had chances to personally say so.
The title of this email is sort of strange, you may think. But if you
have
read a book with the same title recently, you probably would understand
what I mean.
When I was advised to make the decision of leaving IBM, the company
which I
spent, literally, all my youth, my immediate reaction was "Who took
this
away from me?". But when I re-gained control of my mind a few minutes
later, I realised that I have been relying on the company for so long
and
for so much that I have forgotten about my jogging shoes which was put
away
so permenantly 5 years ago when I re-joined the company. I realised
that
the cheese has actually got rotten, has been consumed daily for 20
years
and I had not noticed it. Not a bit of clue until then!
Anyway, I have now found and put on my jogging shoes. I have now
wandered
away from where the old cheese was and am working my way into the maze
of
uncertainty and opportunity. I have not found new cheese yet but you
bet, I
will. A lot more cheese!
Louis, Sammy, Hilbert and folks in Customer Engineering (well, ITS), I
had
spent most of my time in the unit of IBM which I was most proud of. I
feel
honored to be able to fix Selectric typewriters. Not only did I learn
the
way to do customer services, I learned to work with people, to respect
people and to create harmony with teammates.
Katina, Lam, Francis SK, Pearl, and folks in ISC (well, TSC), the time
I
acted as a PSR was one of my golden period. I enjoyed it best. And I
bet
you did.
Tim, Jeff, Titus, Richard, David Choi and the old AS/400 "worshipers"
(and
the new iSeries "worshipers"). I bet that none of us would ever say a
bad
word about a machine so nicely engineered. I promise, I never will.
Dominic, Johnson Sherng, Charles Liou, Henry Yu and (not so many) NHD
friends, I still remember the moment we got the news of moving away
from
networking hardware business. It was a moment of emotions! It was also
a
reflection of all the sweat and tears we shed for those few years when
we
almost overtook Cisco in router sales (by unit). That was exciting!
Paul, Andy, Grady, Daniel, Mike, Henry Chan, Gao Jing, and many many of
you
in SSG, I could not have been myself without my times in such a vibrant
business unit. All the creativities and hardwork plus the endless
mid-night/early dawn teleconference has helped us to bring NAS from
nowhere
to No.1 in marketshare (as suggested by IDC). I would keep repeating
this
message (cause I am so proud of it) even if I am forced to join any of
IBM's competitors one of these days.
In net, this 20 years has been a lot to me. Anyway, time has come that
I
have to turn the page and open a new chapter. My son is 5 months old.
Like
him, I am yet to learn how to walk, how to talk and how to fight,
better.
This time, I will not forget about my jogging shoes.
Good luck, good health and good fortune (for this and the following
endless
quarter ends)!
Please keep this email to save my email address: raymond_cm@yahoo.com .
I'll continue to be on my Hong Kong mobile phone number of 90391504.

cheese, new cheese and jogging shoes, get your copy of this book at:
